Plastic roofing shingles and tiles are formed with a polymer based or composite material. Plastic or synthetic roofing products are manufactured from blends of new and recycled plastic materials. For this purpose a proprietary molding process is used. The tiles created by this method look better and stronger as compared to natural material. Plastic roofing products are generally lighter than clay, tile, slate and cement roofing.

The synthetic roofing tiles are available in synthetic slate tiles, synthetic cedar shake, classic Spanish/Mission tiles and provincial flat tiles. These all are available in variety of popular colors.

Synthetic roofing is great for the environment as it can be fully recycled even after it's 50 year lifespan. Synthetic materials require minimal maintenance compared to other structural exterior products like your common sloped roof Asphalt Shingles.

Fire Ratings:

Roofing products are evaluated for fire resistance. Synthetic roofing material is found to be fire resistant.

Class A: required for very high hazard zone.

Class B: required for high severity zone

Class C: required for the moderate zone

Types of the Plastic/ synthetic Roofing:

  • ASA (Acrylonitrile, Styrene, Acrylic rubber); formed from synthetic resin rubber
  • ASA + PVC ; combination roofing products
  • Fiberglass and reinforced fiberglass roofing products
  • Fiber-cement roofing
  • Molded polymer; this is ideal for areas which are likely to receive hail
  • Resin + paper based; roofing products
  • PVC (polyvinyl chloride based roofing tile products)
  • Resin slate; products such as Brit Slate
  • Rubber-based; made in a wide variety from crumb rubber

Plastic/Synthetic Roof Benefits:

  • Generally, synthetic roofing systems are made from recycled material.
  • Plastic roofing is lighter in weight it means less fossil fuel burnt while transporting the material.
  • Less production cost
  • Lasts for a long time
  • Plastic roofing shingles are ideal for new roofing or exteriors that require replacements
  • They can be used over asphalt shingles
  • These are fire tested and available in class A and class C.
  • Synthetic roofing tiles are durable and meet all the needs of green building
  • It is simple to cut the odd shapes
  • Easy installation. All tiles are nailed or screwed and applied like other roofing products
  • Fire and flame resistance
  • UV resistance
  • Hail and golf ball resistant
  • Zero moisture uptake
  • The look makes your home stand out

Plastic/ Synthetic Roof Styles:

Spanish Barrel Tile: The Spanish Barrel tile is similar to Clay Barrel tile. These are replacing clay or concrete exteriors which are heavy while Spanish Barrel tiles are light in weight.

Synthetic Slate Roofing Tiles:  The natural slate is a heavy product and needs additional support as compared to synthetic slate roofing. Synthetic slate is also available in variety of colors.

Synthetic Shake: Synthetic shake looks like natural wooden shake with increased durability. Typical roof shingles have a 20-30 year lifespan and also needs maintenance on a regular basis as they absorb water and are more vulnerable to high winds, hail, snow and fire when compared to the synthetic shake.
